THE investigation team which helped put the murderer of a Rednal pensioner behind bars has received recognition.

In June 2011, Paul Cox was killed by a man who broke into his Rednal home, and stole his car.

Earlier this year Cory Youlden was given a life sentence for the murder of the 83-year-old, having previously pleaded guilty to burglary and theft charges in connection with the case.

The investigation team responsible for finding Mr Cox's murderer and bringing him to justice were honoured at an awards ceremony held at West Mercia Police’s headquarters, Hindlip Hall, in December.

The awards recognise the outstanding commitment and dedication officers and police staff had shown, above and beyond the call of duty.

The investigation team included Detective Sergeant Stephen Cook, commended for his dedication and detective ability as the officer in charge of the investigation, and Detective Sergeant Amjad Iqbal, commended for his role as a Family Liaison Officer.

Forensic investigator Greg Cunliffe was also commended for his dedication, professionalism, initiative and attention to detail in processing the murder scene.

Other officers recognised at the ceremony were those from West Mercia Police who helped in the policing of the successful Olympic Games in the summer, and the torch relay that went through the region earlier in the year.

Chief Constable David Shaw addressed those receiving the awards on the evening, and their family and friends who attended.

He said: "As a force, having individuals of such a high quality within our organisation is of great importance to us, and I am extremely proud, and humbled, to hear about the outstanding difference that all these officers and staff made in helping and protecting our communities."
