Bromsgrove dental staff walk the talk!
3:00pm Tuesday 10th September 2013 in Local
STAFF from a Bromsgrove dental practice will be raising vital cash and awareness to combat all head and neck cancers.
Members of College Road Dental Practice will be taking part in the Mouth Cancer 10km Awareness Walk on September 29 in London’s Hyde park.
The annual event, raising money for the Mouth Cancer Foundation, hopes to raise awareness of the symptoms of mouth cancer.
Dentist Martina Fell, from the practice, said: “We’re all looking forward to the walk but we are not very fit so it might be a struggle.
“The aim though is let people know that oral cancer is actually increasing in incidence where many other cancers are getting less common.
“At the practice we have personal experience with several of our patients being diagnosed with it in recent years.”
As well as taking part in the walk staff from practice are also running a free drop in clinic next Wednesday, September 18 from 12.45pm to 1.45pm.
Anyone with any concerns regarding the soft tissues in their mouth, long lasting ulcers, white patches or lumps in the cheeks, lips, tongue, floor or roof of the mouth can go along.
It is open to all, including patients not registered with the practice.
Ms Fell said: “It is important to have regular dental checks to screen for this cancer, especially for those with risk factors such as smoking or increased alcohol consumption.
“If it is not caught quick enough it can often lead to patients dying. So this is actually a good reason for everyone to visit the dentist.”
