AN event remembering a Rubery teenager who died of meningitis has been hailed a big success.
Nicola Hurlbutt was just 15-years-old when she died of the virus in February 1999.
To mark and celebrate what would have been her 30th birthday, on August 24 a fund-raiser was held to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation.
The event included a five-a-side football tournament at Rubery Leisure Centre. More than 100 people attended, with 16 teams entering.
The winning team was Rubery Legion FC, winning the final which went to penalties against Callowbrook Allstars.
In the evening around 300 people attended a party at Rubery Social Club, which included a raffle, and various activities.
In total an impressive £1,800 was raised.
Organiser Carlie Orme said: “To top it off Kelly Hurlbutt, Nicola’s sister, kept us all on our toes by going into labour and giving birth to a beautiful baby girl called Millie on the day, giving a wonderful announcement on the evening.
“We want to thank everyone that helped organise it, who donated prizes and gifts, and came along and supported such a great event.”
