Charity boat trip to raise money in memory of Bromsgrove soldier
2:30pm Sunday 15th September 2013 in Local
BROMSGROVE residents are being invited to enjoy a charity boat trip being held in memory of town soldier Robbie Laws.
In August, the Advertiser reported on the annual fund-raiser Remembering Robbie, which honours Private Robbie Laws who was killed at the age of 18 in Afghanistan in 2009.
The event proved a success as more than £2,000 was raised.
Each year at the event Robbie’s mum, Wendy, and other organisers approach local businesses requesting donations of items for the event’s grand raffle.
When Severn Leisure, in Upton-upon-Severn, was approached for a couple of boat trip tickets instead it offered the MV Conway Castle - the largest vessel on the river Severn - for an evening.
Mrs Laws said she was overwhelmed by the generous offer, and so has organised another fund-raiser; a Soul on the Severn night on the boat.
The event is a three hour cruise along the Severn and includes a licensed bar and dance floor.
It takes place from 7.30pm until 11pm on Saturday, October 5.
International soul DJ Mick Bennett has been booked for the evening, and as well as soul he will be playing motown and music from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
Food will also be provided.
All money raised will be donated to Help for Heroes charity, in memory of Robbie.
Tickets, which cost £15, are on sale but there is a limited number available.
For more details or to book tickets call Severn Leisure on 01684593112, or Mrs Laws on 07983526122.
