Bromsgrove concert club celebrates special anniversary
10:00am Saturday 5th October 2013 in Local
A BROMSGROVE club is celebrating five decades of entertaining townsfolk with a special anniversary concert.
For 50 years Bromsgrove Concerts has held its own events, as well as hosted concerts from many famous musicians from the classical world, including a young Nigel Kennedy who once gave a memorable performance.
The club has held its concerts in several different venues since being founded including North Bromsgrove School, the Spadesbourne Suite and now the Artrix, in School Drive.
As well as its regular winter series of events Bromsgrove Concerts has also put on special weekends devoted to the music of one composer, and a pioneering series of contemporary chamber music events, held at Avoncroft’s Guesten Hall.
To celebrate the birthday season the club has commissioned, together with Droitwich Concert Club, a new work by Worcester composer Ian Venables.
It will be given in the last programme of the series, set to take place next March, by the Cavaleri quartet and Timothy Orpen.
This season’s concerts include well loved works from the classical repertoire, as well as different soloists and styles.
There will be concerts from guitarist Craig Ogden, a piano recital by Mark Bebbington, and a concert by the Ensemble Amaranthos.
The special birthday concert is being held on Friday, October 18, and will be given by the Atrium quartet.
They will be playing the Walton string quartet, and the piano quintets of Elgar and Shostakovich with Nicholas Stavy on piano.
Concert-goers will be able to enjoy birthday cake and bubbly to toast the club’s founders, and its continuing success.
Bernard Hall-Mancey, club secretary, said over the years visiting groups and soloists have commented warmly on the concert arrangements, the hall's acoustics and the hospitality put on for them.
Full details of the current winter season can be found on the club’s website, bromsgrove-concerts.org.uk.
