AN ex-pupil has been welcomed back to a Bromsgrove school after helping the next generation of students.

Matthew Taylor attended the school between 1968 and 1973, during which he was secretary of the astronomical society.

Wanting to support the Worcester Road school, which helped him as a youngster, Mr Taylor responded to the Foundation Telephone Campaign in 2012, and provided funding for a new observatory for the school and astronomy equipment.

The new observatory will allow GCSE, A Level and IB students to take part in astronomy projects at any time of the day or night, with a suitable site being found at the Preparatory School in Old Station Road to house the equipment.

It is hoped building work will begin soon, so the observatory will be ready to be unveiled at the school’s annual Commemoration Day, in July 2014.

Mr Taylor said: "I had always intended to give something back to the school and was delighted when this project came up.

"Inspiration is part of the essence of education and since ancient times the heavens have been a wonderful source of it."
