ALL road users – including pedestrians and motorists – are being urged to have a safe new year.

With the new year celebrations upon us, tonight will be a very busy one in towns and cities across the area.

The Safer Roads Partnership, West Mercia Police and Warwickshire Police are reminding anyone who is out and about as a pedestrian to take care, particularly at night when it is more difficult for other road users to see you.

Pedestrians are encouraged to ensure they are visible to motorists, use pedestrian crossings where possible, avoid walking near fast or unlit roads and take extra care not to stray on to the road if they’ve been drinking.

Vicki Bristow, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “With one of the busiest nights of the year upon us, we’re encouraging all road users to share the road responsibly.

"Sadly, 11 pedestrians have been killed and 80 have been seriously injured in Warwickshire and West Mercia since March 2013. By following a few simple steps, looking out for each other and being aware of other road users, we can all do our bit to keep ourselves and others safe on the roads.”

Motorists are also being urged to take extra care this new year.

There will be a huge number of cars, buses and taxis on the roads and all motorists are being asked to look out for other road users who may be more vulnerable, particularly at night when it’s dark and pedestrians may be coming out of pubs and clubs after drinking.
