Football match in aid of Georgia Williams Trust
4:29pm Wednesday 8th January 2014 in Local
WEST Mercia Police officers and staff will stage a soccer match at Bromsgrove this Sunday, January 12 to raise funds for the Georgia Williams Trust.
The match between the North Worcestershire and Telford and Wrekin Territorial Policing Units will kick off at 3pm on the all-weather pitch at Bromsgrove School in Worcester Road, with the Georgia Williams Football Trophy up for grabs.
Spectators will be invited to donate £1 and each player will donate £5 to the trust which aims to generate funds and activities to enable young people to participate in life-building activities and contribute to the local community.
The trust was set up to provide a lasting legacy to 17-year-old Georgia following her murder at Wellington, Telford, last year and in the first six months after it was established it managed to raise £30,000.
The match has been organised by Redditch-based PC Stuart Baugh who said: “We wanted to put on a charity match here in North Worcestershire and the links with Telford through Georgia’s father, who is a serving police officer with West Mercia, made it all the more fitting to do that on behalf of the trust.
“We are hoping for a good turn-out on Sunday afternoon and I’m sure it will be an enjoyable occasion for all concerned. There has been a good response from officers and staff in both areas and the fact that anyone who is booked will be asked to make a further donation should help ensure that the match played in the right spirit.”
Richard Langton, chairman of trust, said: "The match is the latest in a growing number of fundraisers from colleagues of Georgia's dad Steve, which have included running full and half marathons and even moustache-growing.
“We very much hope that this will become an annual event and to play for a trophy in Georgia's name will be particularly poignant. I am sure it will be proudly displayed in whichever police station it ends up in.”
