URGET traffic calming measures are needed outside all Bromsgrove schools, according to concerned councillors.

Councillors Caroline Spencer and Rod Laight, who represent the Conservatives on Bromsgrove District Council, are now coordinating steps to help protect pupils in the area.

Coun Spencer said: "We have had worried parents with children attending Aston Fields Middle and Finstall First Schools contacting us expressing their concerns and fears that an accident is going to eventually happen because of heavy parking and speeding vehicles outside the schools."

Worcestershire County Councillor for Bromsgrove East, Kit Taylor, who is already pressing highways officers at County Hall, said "This is a serious situation and of course we want a solution urgently, but the problems are being experienced by schools nationwide and is mainly due to a lot of parents dropping off and picking up their children and causing traffic congestion.

Coun Laight added: "We are now liasing with the police who are stepping up patrols to advise drivers on safe parking.

"A maximum speed limit of 20mph needs to be applied during the peak times. We have submitted a motion to the next full council meeting which will ask for a cross party vote to agree for the council to formally write to the leader of the county council and ask for urgent measures to safeguard all the pupils attending schools in Bromsgrove."
