YOUNGSTERS at a Bromsgrove school were excited to meet a Paralympian who recently visited their school.

Paralympic archery silver medallist Mel Clarke visited pupils at Lickey Hills Primary and Nursery School on January 21.

Since the age of 11 Mel has used a wheelchair because of an arthritic condition, and in 2003 Lyme disease caused her to lose sight in one eye.

At the 2008 summer Paralympics, held in China, Mel won a bronze medal in the women's individual compound event, having defeated fellow British competitor Danielle Brown in the semi-final.

She met Brown again at the 2012 London games, but lost out in the gold medal match.

Mel visited to see the school games level one inclusion competition, supported by the Sky Sports for Living Project.

The project sends an athlete to mentor children in schools to boost confidence, raise achievement and improve life skills.

During the event Mel worked with year six sports leaders to improve team building skills and receive coaching in indoor archery.

In the afternoon the youngsters took part in a multi skills house competition that included boccia, new age kurling and basketball.

Sports co-ordinator Carina Taylor, from Chadsgrove School, said: "Mel Clarke was an inspiration to all those who took part.

"Her shared motto with Lickey Hills Primary and Nursery School is 'dream, believe, work, achieve'.

"The sports leaders and school staff worked amazingly hard in organising this event which allowed all pupils and abilities to take part in competitive sport."
