TWO couples enjoyed a magical Valentine's Day at a Bromsgrove care home.

John and Joan Tidmarsh and Christopher and Pauline Smith celebrated Valentine's Day at Breme Care Home on Friday, (February 14).

Staff at the care home organised for the couple to make special cards for one another, straight from the heart.

John and Joan, who got married in 1947, also enjoyed a candlelit dinner at the Providence Road-based home, where they were serenaded by singers and enjoyed a bottle of bubbly to celebrate their special day.

Joan was 16 and John was 18 when they started dating.

John, a former Royal Air Force pilot and current district councillor for the Stoke ward, said it was love at first sight.

In the mid-1960s Joan became very ill and was told she had just 18 months to live. But after beating the odds, Joan's miraculous recovery makes her laugh today.

The home’s activities leader, Helen Barron, said: “John comes to see Joan every day.

"He always brings her a punnet of fruit or some flowers - they are so in love and are such a devoted couple.”

Another couple who celebrated were Christopher and Pauline Smith, who have lived at the home since September.

They met in Wednesbury and were married at Bromsgrove Registry Office 10 years ago.

The pair put their successful marriage down to honesty and openness, and both sharing a light hearted view of life.

Helen added: “Christopher and Pauline are an amazing couple and their love is an inspiration to us all, so we are so happy to celebrate this special day with them.”
