A CHURCH in Finstall is celebrating the last day before Lent with an indulgent party in the tradition of ‘Mardi Gras’

The term, which means Fat Tuesday, is similar to the more modest tradition of Shrove Tuesday, and was a reason for a party, dating back to Medieval Europe.

The tradition even carried over to the United States with French settlers establishing a huge Mardi Gras party in New Orleans in the 1700s which still takes place today.

In the spirit of the day, St Godwald’s Church is holding its own Mardi Gras party on Saturday, March 1 from 7.30-10.30pm.

Fancy dress is optional, but partygoers are asked to dress in their brightest clothes, and each will be provided with a mask before the evening, which they can decorate.

There will be prizes on the night for the most original mask, and the chance to indulge before Lent begins with casseroles, chilli, curry and vegetarian dishes on offer.

There will also be fruit juice and water made available, but people bringing drinks are asked to provide their own glasses.

Tickets for the event are £7 for adults and £3.50 for children, and people can book places by signing the list at the back of the church.

Further information, and tickets are also available by calling the Rev Carey Saleh on 01527 879487, or Pat Archer on 0121 4454073.
