CLENT History Society is hosting an illustrated talk on ‘Beer, Bets and Bull Baiting’ on Thursday, March 27.
The talk is being organised by Mary Bodfish, and will focus on the social life of local people in the 1820s, which was often rougher and tougher than people might be used to today.
Wakes and fairs were popular in all the industrial districts with the poor and labouring classes drinking heavily for a brief alcohol-fuelled holiday fling, as well as indulging in blood sports.
Ms Bodfish entertains the idea that society hasn’t really left the attitude involved behind.
The talk begins at 8pm in Clent Parish Hall with a £2.50 fee for non-members, and tea and coffee supplied.
