NATURE lovers from Bromsgrove are being invited to discover more about Worcestershire’s wonderful wildlife.

Local conservation charity Worcestershire Wildlife Trust is running a series of wildlife discovery courses to help adults find out more about everything from flowers and trees to beetles and dormice.

Each session is led by a local expert with a wealth of knowledge about their subject and the county’s diverse wildlife.

Bic Beaumont, communications assistant for the charity, said: “Our courses are a really great opportunity for people to dip their toes into the world of wildlife or increase the knowledge they already have.

“We don’t expect anyone to come already armed with a lot of knowledge; some of our courses are for absolute beginners, for example.

“The courses are friendly and informal with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get advice.”

Bird Song for Absolute Beginners was so popular in 2013 that the course is running twice this year; on Saturday, May 3 and again on Saturday, May 10.

The course, which takes place at Lower Smite Farm, helps participants to identify common birds by their beautiful birdsong.

The bird theme continues at the end of May with Birdwatching for Beginners at Upton Warren. The course includes where to watch birds, what equipment is (or isn’t) needed and also offers the chance to visit the county’s premier birdwatching nature reserve to put new-found skills to the test.

Other courses to be held during the year include learning about longhorn beetles, moths, dormice and tracking wetland mammals.

Bic continued: “There really is something to interest everyone. As well as discovering more about, and hopefully seeing, mammals and insects, our courses also cover wildflowers, plants and trees.

“They take place all around the county. We’ll be looking at woodland flora in the Wyre Forest, dormice near Worcester and beetles near Pershore.”

The courses involve an indoor presentation and the chance to get out and put the newly-learned knowledge into practice.

“They’re always really popular and often get booked up so we advise anyone who’s interested to call us and book their place before it’s too late,” added Bic.

Courses cost £15 or £20 per person and places are limited.

Booking is essential for all courses and further information can be found at worcswildlifetrust.co.uk/courses. Bookings can be made by calling Bic on 01905 754919 or emailing her at bic@worcestershirewildlifetrust.org.
