THE doors of the first public art space in Longbridge town centre are set to open this weekend (Saturday, March 22)

The contemporary project space, located in the retail unit next to Costa Coffee, has been donated by housing developer St Modwen Homes to be used by nine artists in residence and the local community.

Claire Farrell, art director at independent art organisation EC Arts, said: “The project space is open to all and we are encouraging as many people as possible to come along and talk with the artists. We would love people to share their stories about Longbridge, Northfield and the surrounding areas.

“We are exploring who, what and where Longbridge is, to help create a sense of identity for the area and, through a number of different events, workshops and discussions we hope to engage with people of all ages and backgrounds.”

On the opening day, visitors are invited to come along and take part in a large-scale creative collage, being organised by one of EC Art’s artists, Redhawk Logistica.

The collage will be made up of photographs and images of Longbridge, both past and present. Members of the general public are invited to bring their own pictures which will be photocopied and included in the artwork.

Andrea Bolton, Property Manager at St. Modwen, added: “The project space is a great opportunity for local people to get involved with community art, ranging from craft projects such as the large-scale collage, to story-telling and delving into the local archives.

“As the developer behind the regeneration of Longbridge town centre, we will be working with the nine artists in residence to assist us with our own placemaking efforts, helping to create a sense of identity for the area.”

During its lifespan, the project space will evolve and transform, reflecting the artists’ progress as they explore the past, present and future of Longbridge.

Residents, students and those working in Longbridge, will be involved in the programme as well as leading and participating in events within the space.
