A COUPLE from Longbridge has celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, but it wasn't always plain sailing for the two sweethearts.
Married on April 8 1944, Fred and Peggy Steer met at the Lickey Hills 74 years ago when Peggy was just 15 and Fred 17.
After a few years they married at St Luke’s Church in Edgbaston but in a matter of weeks Fred was sent to Burma with his regimen for three years.
This didn’t shake them though as 70 years on they’re still going strong, blessed with a daughter and two grandchildren.
To celebrate the occasion, the couple enjoyed a spring themed three-course luncheon at Burcot Grange Residential Home where they were presented with a bouquet of flowers by home manager Vicky Osborne.
“What a super day we had, the food was delicious and we were well looked after,” Said Mr Steer.
This wasn't all the fine dining for the pair though as they also had a delicious Sunday carvery with a few magnums of prosecco at the Abbey Hotel in Redditch with their family and friends.
The couple also plan to travel to Buckingham Palace in June to celebrate their special milestone in style.
