A WOMAN who has started a charity to help people suffering from bowel conditions after having her own intestine removed because of Crohn's disease is holding its first fundraising event in Bromsgrove.

Lauren Henderson, 26, from Kidderminster, was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, which causes the lining of the digestive system to become inflamed, when she was only 21-years-old and after suffering several years' of pain was told by doctors last year that she would need surgery.

Lauren had her large intestine removed and found out an ileostomy bag would have to be fitted for the rest of her life.

Initially worried how the surgery would change the way she looked, she eventually decided to go ahead with it and instead of letting the experience get her down she has done everything to make sure she stays positive.

"Before I found out I was having the surgery I had nightmares about the bag and was completely devastated about how it would affect my life," she said.

"However, now the surgery is over and I'm no longer in pain I'm finally getting my life back and want to be positive about everything that has happened."

Lauren has visited sufferers due to undergo her traumatic operation and hand-made designer bag covers for trendy young sufferers who may feel awkward about wearing the bags.

She has appeared in The Daily Mail newspaper and Dansac magazine, the official publication of the company that manufactures ileostomy and colostomy bags, and wants to make the Purple Wings Charity she has set up an organisation that can help sufferers from bowel conditions to build back their confidence via photo shoots, spa treatments and other fun experiences.

"I didn't realise how much this condition affects people mentally. I have made sure it doesn't ruin the rest of my life and want to spread that message that people can be positive about what is happening to them and live a good life," added Lauren.

The first event will be held at the Holiday inn, Bromsgrove on May 30 at 7.00pm.

Tickets cost £14 and can be purchased by contacting Lauren on 07557789081 or laurenhenderson1987@hotmail.co.uk.
