BROMSGROVE'S MP has made his first keynote speech since being appointed Culture Secretary.

The MP was appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in April, replacing Maria Miller who resigned over the controversy over her expenses.

In the speech made in Bristol to the arts sector, the town MP said that culture is for everyone - stressing the colour of your skin, size of your bank balance and the town where you live should not be a barrier to participation and progress.

During the speech Mr Javid said too many Britons are culturally disenfranchised and "excluded from what should be our shared cultural life".

Mr Javid admitted he had "a pretty mainstream cultural education", the kind that "millions of Britons will recognise". He went on to name-check Star Trek, Star Wars, U2 and Michael Rosen during his speech.

The town MP also said he wanted to see more donations like the recent £5 million from Sir Michael Hintze to the Natural History Museum.

"I read recently that London is home to more billionaires than any other city on the planet," he said.

"One of the reasons such people choose to live here is our world-beating cultural scene and there's no reason why they can't do more to support it."
