GROSVENOR House Nursing Home in Alvechurch held its summer fete on June 21 in aid of the Kidderminster & District Prostate Cancer support group.

The charity was chosen by one of its directors, Mr Kamal Khan, as Professor Bob Davies, who is a member of the support group was also head of department at the University of Birmingham when Mr Khan was studying there.

It was a fantastic day for residents, families, staff and many visitors, all of who enjoyed a sunny afternoon within the home's grounds.

“We were especially pleased to have four generations of several families present," said Mr Khan. “We go out of our way to encourage and support our residents and relatives to visit the home and keep in touch with their loved ones.”

There was something for everyone including a tombola, home made cakes, Pimms and strawberries, ice creams, books, fashion clothes, plants and a traditional sweet stall. Children also had fun with face painting and a bouncy castle.

Prof Davies auctioned the last remaining Rowney Green Calendar Boys 2014 calendar at the fete. The auction was won by Mary Blake, a neighbour of the home, who said she "simply had to win the bidding".

The Aunt Sally was a great hit, so much so that the Grosvenor House staff raised £55 just to put Mr Khan in the firing line of the wet sponges.

The fete smashed its £1,000 target, raising £1,736. Key to this success was Roy Jinks, the son of one of the residents, who has pledged £900.

A week earlier the directors, managers, staff and relatives of residents of Grosvenor House and Tutnall Hall nursing homes did a sponsored walk, raising £805 so far.

Prof Davies said: "This was an amazing effort due entirely to the staff and volunteers at Grosvenor House and Tutnall Hall nursing homes. A big thanks to them."

The group will put the funds towards the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust campaign for a £1.6 million surgical robot for the Alexandra Hospital.
