BROMSGROVE councillors are set to be in the dark at an event marking the centenary of the First World War.

The district council is taking part in a dramatic nationwide event called Lights Out in which everyone involved will turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on Monday, August 4.

After switching lights off, participants leave only a single light or candle on.

To get involved the district council will be switching off lights at the Burcot Lane building.

Councillor Michael Webb, whose portfolio covers leisure and cultural services, said: “The event is expected to be one of the biggest participatory events ever seen in the UK.

"It provides the opportunity for reflection and consideration of a poignant time in our history, so I would encourage everyone to get involved.”
