PLANS to revamp Bromsgrove's market as part of the town centre regeneration work will be discussed at a meeting of Bromsgrove councillors this week.

At the last meeting of Bromsgrove District Council's cabinet, held earlier this month, a report on the market was considered.

New terms and conditions for market traders were agreed by senior councillors who also decided to recommend the purchase of new market stalls, costing £60,000 funded through reserves and balances.

After reconstruction work on the new High Street is completed the plan is to have 33 individual stalls provided to traders, while all pitches have already been successfully allocated with only small additional pitches left.

It is being proposed to have a new dedicated market where the High Street is at its widest at the north end of High Street, near The Strand.

This will have space for a further 14 market stalls, with the area suitable for expansion for speciality markets including the Farmers Markets, Food Festivals, and antique fairs.

An officers report recognised that there had been an absence of a comprehensive policy for the market and the physical layout of the High Street, which led to the market being "slightly disorganised" with no pattern and traders spreading goods across the highway.

This is being addressed with the new High Street featuring dedicated market zones, with stall set out in pairs, ensuring lines of sight are maintained for pedestrians and CCTV.

Stalls are proposed to be uniform in appearance, green and white in colour, featuring the council crest and Better Bromsgrove motive, and designed to be in a pop-up marquee style to minimise labour costs in the setup and dismantling of the market.

The street market recommendations will be considered at the meeting of the full council, being held at the Council House on Wednesday evening, July 16.

The market originally moved to High Street in March 2009, following the closure of the Market Hall.

It then moved from the High Street earlier this year for the construction work, and is currently being held on market days - Tuesdays, Friday and Saturdays - at a temporary position near ASDA  supermarket.

• Meanwhile Worcestershire County Council is reporting that the construction of the new High Street is progressing well.

Councillor Anthony Blagg, county council for Bromsgrove Central, said: "The High Street improvement project has progressed well and completion of this key work, funded by Worcestershire County Council and Bromsgrove District Council, is due for completion in time for a series of events in and around the High Street planned for the August Bank Holiday weekend.

"Contractors Griffiths will continue to install new paving and other street furniture as the end date nears.

"I'd like to thank both residents and traders for their patience and support during this scheme."
