A DRUNKEN argument between two groups of young men at a Bromsgrove social club ended with one of them having a pint glass smashed over his head, a court heard.

Jon Eustace, of Birmingham Road, Bromsgrove, had shared a bottle of a strong liqueur with a friend and was very drunk when the argument started on January 24, Worcester Crown Court was told.

The 21-year-old and his group of friends got involved in an argument with another group at Stoke Prior Sports and Social Club, Michael Conry, prosecuting, told the court.

The confrontation spilled outside and Eustace said he was going to "glass" one of the other group. He challenged a 17-year-old to fight and as the teenager turned away, he hit him on the top of the head from behind with a pint glass. The glass smashed and caused a two-and-a-half centimetre cut which was treated by paramedics.

Charles Hamer, defending, said there had been an argument between the two groups of young men and Eustace claimed he had been punched several times. He was very remorseful and had grown up a lot since the incident. He had a job and spent time with his partner rather than going out drinking. He pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.

Recorder Richard Burns said it was a "disgraceful episode."

"This is what happens if you go out drinking just to get drunk," he said.

He said Eustace was a young man with a lot in his favour and he had decided not to send him straight to prison.

He was given an eight month jail sentence suspended for two years with twelve months supervision. He was also ordered to attend a reducing violence programme and to pay costs of £500 and £500 compensation.
