A REDDITCH mother screamed and lay on the floor of the dock after she was convicted at Worcester Crown Court of not acting to prevent her daughter's death.

Jessica Jamie Wiggin, formerly of the Oakalls, Bromsgrove, was still sobbing as the jury of seven men and four women filed out of court after being thanked by Judge Robert Juckes QC.

Wiggins, 20, was convicted under section five of the Domestic Violence, Crimes and Victims Act 2004 by a jury at Worcester Crown Court on November 19.

The jury arrived at a unanimous verdict at the end of an "unusual and difficult" re-trial which had taken nearly three weeks, said the judge.

Wiggins, aged 20, of Heathfield Road, Redditch, was remanded on bail.

Her partner, 21-year-old Tyler Vallance, of Engadine Road, Redditch, has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of baby Isabella, who died from her injuries in Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The court was told that when the pair lived together at addresses in Redditch and were heard arguing in the days before the baby's death. It was alleged that Wiggins knew that Vallance was a violent and short-tempered man who always acted nervously when he was left in charge of the child.

A post mortem revealed that the 12-week-old baby had head injuries and also had fractures to her ribs and legs. The court heard that these injuries had been suffered at the hands of her father who had assaulted her on more than one occasion.

Wiggins and Vallance separated but got together again when Wiggins became pregnant. They had a second daughter born in December last year and who has been taken into care.

Sentencing of both was adjourned until Thursday, December 18, for the preparation of reports.
