RUBERY youngsters have been learning about how Christmas is celebrated in different countries around the world.

One of the countries children from Jellybabies Nursery and Pre-School looked at was Sweden.

The children explored how Christmas in Sweden begins with the Saint Lucia ceremony before dawn on December 13, when the youngest daughter from each family puts on a white robe with a red sash.

She wears a crown of evergreens with tall lighted candles attached to it and serves her parents coffee and Lucia buns.

The boys dress as star boys in long white shirts and pointed hats.

For the event at the nursery, based at Longbridge Methodist Church, the girls made candle hats while the boys made star hats.

Jacqueline Walker, nursery manager, said: "We feel it is important for the children to learn about and respect other Christmas traditions and learn about the wider world through fun and exciting activities."
