A BROMSGROVE-based housing association has been helping town school youngsters with their latest project.

Teachers from Meadows First School contacted Bromsgrove District Housing Trust (BDHT) to organise a joint project, entitled The World We Live In.

BDHT representatives dropped into the Stourbridge Road-based school to talk to pupils about their community, and to see the negative effects issues such as fly tipping and graffiti can have.

The project also aimed to teach year four children about supporting vulnerable members of society and helping to ensure that neighbourhoods are clean and safe.

BDHT communities first and sheltered living officers worked with more than 60 children from the school, supporting their current class curriculum on citizenship.

Hannah Ross, bdht's sheltered living manager, said: “We really enjoyed working with the children from Meadows First School; they were enthusiastic and seemed to enjoy learning about the value of being a good neighbour.

"The children learned about the need to look after vulnerable members of society by visiting some of our elderly residents in Shenstone Court and talking to them.

"We also talked about why acts such as fly tipping and graffiti are wrong and discussed ways in which they could help their community.

“We’re always happy to work with local schools to educate children about the negative effects of anti-social behaviour. At BDHT we aim to offer decent homes and neighbourhoods to our residents and we hope that by educating these youngsters we can help the next generation to uphold these values.”

Sara Date, key stage two co-ordinator at Meadows First School, said: “The children really enjoyed the project and it supported the work they are currently doing on British values, which includes learning about the local community and their responsibilities within it.

"We are very grateful to BDHT for helping with the project.”
