A CELEBRATION is being held in Bromsgrove to welcome the triumphant fundraising cycling team led by a Barnt Green resident.

Geoff Thomas was diagnosed with leukaemia and given less than three months to live in 2003.

After receiving treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Geoff has been in remission since 2005.

Since then, the former Wolves midfielder - patron of the Cure Leukaemia charity - has worked tirelessly to raise money for treatment, research and awareness for blood cancer.

Last week the Advertiser reported on his latest challenge, Le Tour - One Day Ahead , which saw a cycling team ride the entire Tour de France route over 23 days, a day ahead of the professional peleton.

Among the participants was Bromsgrove triathlete star Helen Russell - who required stitches after crashing on stage two.

The tour proved a success as the fundraising tour reached Paris on July 28, and helped raise the fundraising total for Cure Leukaemia past the £650,000 mark.

To celebrate the team's achievement a welcome home party is being held at the Victoria Club, at Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club off Birmingham Road on Friday, August 14.

Being hosted by ITV's Tour de France commentator Ned Boutling, there will be a question and answer session with Geoff, and a charity auction where guests can bid for items.

Sports stars who have donated items include West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster and commonwealth triathlon champion Jodie Stimpson.

Guests will also be able mingle with the sports stars in attendance, take part in a raffle, and enjoy a buffet and musical entertainment.

Tickets for the event cost £10, with all money raised going to Cure Leukaemia.
