A RUBERY couple have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Paul and Irene Neason celebrated 60 happy years together at their Rubery home on Thursday, (August 27).

Irene says she had a tough childhood moving to various children homes. Paul had not long finished his national service when he met Irene at Hawley dance hall, in Dudley Road, in November 1953.

After two years, the pair were married at Aston Church, Birmingham, on August 27, 1955. This was followed by a honeymoon in Paignton.

In 1958 they managed to purchase their first house in the village, and have been there ever since.

They have three children, 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Paul worked as a Tascos bakery salesman, then delivered equipment for the NHS and on retirement went to work for WRVS meals on wheels.

Irene started as a ledger clerk, then did various jobs until training as a nurse working at Bromsgrove General Hospital. The hospital later became the Princess of Wales, and Irene had the chance to meet Diana when it opened.

She then volunteered to work in a shop at the hospital, raising money for them.

The pair are now both retired, enjoy socialising, travelling the world, and regularly holiday in the UK with the fellowship group.

Irene and Paul agreed the secret of marriage was always being there for each other, and having a good sense of humour.

Irene added the pair celebrated their milestone anniversary with a meal that all the family enjoyed.
