"BAGGIES", Wolves and Villa fans are among those being urged to make good use of their "day off" top flight football - by turning up to support a local, non-league derby in Bromsgrove.

Bromsgrove Sporting is throwing open its doors for "Non-League Day" on Saturday, October 10, when there are no premiership or championship matches because England are playing Estonia on Friday.

The club is one of only four in the country this year chosen to officially celebrate "Non-League Day", a national campaign to encourage people to see their local teams.

And the side are looking forward to putting up a good performance on the pitch, when they take on Pershore in the Midland Football League Division 5 - as well as showing off the other attractions of non-league football.

Bromsgrove matches normally attract around 300 spectators - but the club hopes that will rise to at least 500 this Saturday.

"It's a nice place to come for the family - very friendly and youngsters don't have to stay in their seats and can wander around the ground," said Bromsgrove Sporting spokesman Phil Baker.

"We have a very good range of pies and chips.

"It's good quality football and quite entertaining.

"And it's a lot cheaper than the main league football matches - we charge £6 for adults, £4 for OAPs, £2 for over 12s and under 12s come in free if they are with their parents."

The Bromsgrove Sporting Supporters Society, which owns 30 per cent of the club, is using the opportunity of "Non-League Day" to promote the club and stimulate interest among people in the local community.

There will be an added attraction at Bromsgrove Sporting on Saturday, when the ground hosts the semi final and final of a "Walking Football" six-a-side mini tournament for over 50s from 12.30pm.

Teams taking part in the heats during this week include Pershore, Redditch, Kidderminster and Hall Green.

Anyone entering the ground before 1pm to watch the climax of the tournament on Saturday will be allowed in free, to include admission for the Pershore match - and there will be free squash and biscuits at half-time for children, along with a football "goody bag".

There will be mascots for both Bromsgrove Sporting and Pershore Town from Millfields First School.

Libby Mae's Little Angels, the charity supported by Bromsgrove Sporting, will provide entertainment at half-time.

"Non-League Day" was set up in 2010 by James Doe as a social media experiment after he was inspired by a pre-season trip to Devon to watch Queen's Park Rangers play at Tavistock.
