YOUNG tennis payers and those who would like to find out more about the sport in Bromsgrove, will have the chance to have a go for free as part of a scheme organised through the British Davis Cup.

Following the British team’s success last year, when they won the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years, the Lawn Tennis Association has launched a new Tennis for Kids Campaign to help get more children involved.

Bromsgrove youngsters will be able to take advantage of the campaign in Barnt Green, where tennis coach Paul Cowie is running two additional courses.

He said: “There’s no doubt that it’s a great time for British tennis with the Davis Cup success and players like Andy and Jamie Murray, Johanna Konta and Heather Watson, who’re all helping to get young people into the sport.”

The club will be running a six-week course aimed at five to eight-year-olds throughout the summer, combining fun activities with the basic skills involved in the game. At the end of the course each child will also receive a free tennis racket.

He added: “I’m really excited that we’re part of this and that we’re giving children the chance to try tennis for the first time.”

Paul, who’s also coached at Warwick Tennis Club and Bromsgrove School, had to go through a special LTA training course at Loughborough University to ensure he met the association’s requirements. His session was headed up by Davis Club captain Leon Smith.

He said: “It was a real privilege to be coached by Leon, who’s so passionate about the sport. I have no doubt that this campaign will make a big difference and that thousands of children will discover that tennis is a fantastic game.”
