A 31-YEAR-OLD man, who took his mum's car without consent and led police on a chase through Bromsgrove, has been jailed for 15 months.

David Lakin, of Crossley Court, Catshill, was breath-tested after he crashed at 75mph into a police car and was found to be nearly twice the drink-drive limit.

Lakin pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking and driving with excess alcohol and no insurance. He was disqualified for two and a half years.

Prosecutor Tim Sapwill said Lakin took his mum's car keys and drove off on the A38 towards Lydiate Ash.

His mother then phoned the police and two officers were waiting on the A38 when he came past.

They followed Lakin and when he turned around, another police car joined the pursuit.

At the roundabout, he drove through two red lights before crashing with one of the police cars and hitting some metal railings.

He was arrested after failing the breath test and told police he took his mum's car keys after an argument with his dad.

Mr Sapwill said Lakin had 11 convictions after 17 court appearances, several of which were for motoring offences.

Mitigating, Lisa Hancox said his crimes showed an impulsive attitude, but probation officer Ignatius Concannon said Lakin had overdosed on strong lager in recent years and drank heavily every day.

Recorder Spencer Bernard said police were eager to keep Lakin away from Bromsgrove town centre because it was very busy that day.

He had driven well above the national speed limit and caused damage to police cars. It was obvious he had an alcohol problem, the court heard.
