MORE than 4,000 people recently turned up for Wythall Carnival, celebrating the golden anniversary of the Silver Street park.

The carnival, held last weekend in Wythall Park, featured the Tournee Medieval Re-Enactment Organisation which showcased life in medieval times and fighting techniques of the time.

Arena events included a dance display by the Sorella Academy, a karate demonstration by Furi Sutairu Shotokan and a birds of prey display.

Visitors also got to see a miniature steam train from the Wythall Transport Museum, try out Birmingham Bumper Balls or browse more than 70 stalls selling everything from food to local crafts.

John-Paul Campion, West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, even found himself in the back of a police van.

Chairman for Wythall Carnival Sarah Lee said the event was an amazing success.

"All the money we raised from the event will go to the upkeep of the park," she said.

"A special thanks needs to go to Paul Johnson who helped and planned and worked solidly throughout, even though under going treatment for cancer."
