ELDERLY residents are being tricked into giving their bank details to phone scammers.

Hagley and Rubery Safer Neighbourhood Team have been made aware of organisations phoning residents claiming that they are enquiring about re-banding their council tax.

Scammers get the victim to pass their bank details and then take money from their account.

Hagley and Rubery SNT have warned residents to be mindful of telephone scams and to ensure relatives or neighbours who are vulnerable to this type of offence are made aware.

A spokesperson said: "With any cold callers please ensure that you are not pressured into handing over any personal details.

"If they won't take no for answer or become persistent hang up."

Official organisations – such as the police, council or a bank – will never ask for bank details or PIN over the telephone.

Anybody who has received a call is urged to contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
