A GROUP of novice cyclists have completed a challenge to ride 30 miles through Bromsgrove's countryside, as part of the Couch to 50K initiative.

The program, sponsored by Bromsgrove District Council, was run in conjunction with volunteer ride leaders from the Bromsgrove-based V-Sprint Cycling Club.

The leaders supported and guided the 13 cyclists in their six weeks of training, teaching them road awareness, cycling techniques, bicycle maintenance, safety checks and equipment requirements to make the most of their experience.

V-Sprint ride leader Lawrence "Pete" Cairns-Smith said: "Everyone in the group has ridden out of their comfort zones and improved both their stamina and confidence. But as well as congratulating the riders on their efforts we would like to thank other road users for their patience and consideration, which made it easier for the group to reach their goal."

Hayley Gwilliam, sports development officer for Bromsgrove District Council, added: "Not only have these participants got off the couch and enjoyed the countryside on their doorstep, they are more confident to continue to do so and incorporate cycling as part of their healthy lifestyle.”
