A VALUABLE autism support group in Bromsgrove which was set to close after losing its funding has been rescued by three inspirational mums.

The group, which was provided by Autism West Midlands (AWM), saw its future flung into jeopardy after the charity lost its funding to run it.

Yet a trio of parents who have benefited from the group’s support when caring for their own children on the autism spectrum have now stepped in to run it themselves.

Susan Tracey, who will run it with Rachel Baker and Tracy Winchester, said: “We couldn't have imagined losing the regular support that we'd had from this group and from each other and felt that it was extremely important to try to keep it going.

“My son Tom is seven years old and has a diagnosis of autism, dyspraxia, sensory processing disorder and other learning difficulties.

“During the early stages I felt so isolated and alone and I really didn't know where or who to turn to and what help was out there for us.

“I can honestly say that the initial help and support from other parents was invaluable to me and I wish to be there to help other parents who may be in my position if I can.

“We want local parents who may be struggling alone to know that we are here for them and that they have somewhere to go.”

The group, which has around 100 registered members, will now be parent-funded.

They will aim to provide support to children and launch an evening group for fathers, while also raise awareness of autism – particularly in education.

Ms Winchester, whose five-year-old son Roran is on the autism spectrum, said: “There is not a lot from an educational perspective or services to meet the needs of children.

“There are a lot of waiting lists in services and you run into dead ends as a parent and do not know where to go, so this group is vital for parents and children.”

AWM could sadly no longer provide the service due to "challenging financial times", but vowed to offer support to the group until July.

A spokesman added: "Autism West Midlands will continue to support the parents and carers support group in Bromsgrove until July 2017.

"Unfortunately however many charities including Autism West Midlands are facing challenging financial times at present with ongoing reductions in funding.

"Although Autism West Midlands would like to continue supporting the group beyond July, this is now uncertain due to a reduction in funding overall.

"The charity would like to stress that offering support to parents and carers to those on the autism spectrum is extremely important.

"These groups often provide a listening ear, a sounding board for emotions and experiences and an opportunity to share information."

The group meets on the third Friday of every month at Bromsgrove Methodist Church from 10.30am-noon.For information email contact@worcestershire-autismsupportgroup.co.uk.
