SINGER-songwriter Louise Jordan will return to Bromsgrove Folk Club to perform tracks from her latest album ‘No Petticoats Here’ this April.

The Salisbury-born singer visits the town as part of a 22-date UK album tour, which tells the stories of women during the First World War.

The album is inspired by the story of Dorothy Lawrence, an aspiring author who dressed as a soldier in order to visit the Western front and pursue her journalistic ambitions.

Louise said: “The First World War too often remembers women as the mourners of the fallen, as frugal housewives ‘making do’ or angelic nurses caring patiently for the men who returned from the front line.

“Through No Petticoats Here I remember some of the many women whose stories do not fit conveniently into boxes and whose experiences are both astonishing and relatable one hundred years on.”

Twelve months of research for the album has taken Louise to the battlefields of the Somme, the Belgian frontline at Pervijse and countless museums.

She also contacted relatives of Dorothy and biographers of other female heroes in the war – such as spies and scientists – to help her bring their fascinating tales to life.

Her show at Bromsgrove Folk Club at the Catshill Club on Meadow Lane begins at 8pm on April 13 and costs £7 for members, £9 for visitors and £3.50 for under-25s.
