OWNERS of a popular café in Rubery who saw their business rise from the ashes after a devastating fire say “irrevocable damage” has forced them to close.

Signpost Café, based at Father’s Barn Market on New Road, was one of eight firms which closed last October after a fire caused by an electrical fault tore through the premises.

Its owners were boosted when they re-opened earlier than expected in December but, just over three months on, they say the lasting effects of the fire have killed their business.

In a statement, owners Annette Taylor and Emma Forsythe said: “Annette and I have come to the decision to close our lovely cafe.

“There is no drama or hard feelings involved just a set of very unfortunate circumstances.

“Unfortunately the fire has irrevocably damaged our footfall and without foreseeable growth we have no choice but to close while things aren't desperate.

“Each and every one of you have meant something in some way to our little journey, some have even become firm friends.

“We have not taken this decision lightly and although we are relieved to be going on a positive note, we are sad too.”

The duo closed the cafe “with a sorry heart” on Tuesday, March 21, and will hold a farewell party on Friday from 11.30am until 9pm.

The market has struggled to get back to its feet after the fire due to a lack of pay-out from insurers, with only two businesses able to trade since.

The sole traders, Amy’s Floral Designs and M&D Mobile Solutions, were dealt a further blow in February when burglars stole thousands of pounds worth of stock.

Market landlord Ian Robinson said: “The fire has had a devastating effect on everybody and it is very sad to see the cafe close.

“We have not yet been able to open the main part of the market and only have two businesses trading.

“Once the insurance pays out maybe there will be some light at the end of the tunnel, but we do not know how long that could take.”
