A MECHANIC from Bromsgrove has been fined for possessing cannabis, after he was given a suspended jail sentence for carrying an offensive weapon.

Self-employed Glen Carver, of Birmingham Road, was found with £40 worth of the class B drug when police searched his home in November, Worcester Crown Court heard today.

Naomi Nelson-Cofie, prosecuting, said Carver admitted to police he had a drug habit and smoked between three and 10 cannabis cigarettes a day.

The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to possession, which put him in breach of a 21-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, for carrying an offensive weapon.

Carver, who was not represented at the hearing, said he had not been in court for a previous hearing because he was in hospital having treatment for injuries sustained in a motorbike accident.

He now had to sign on for benefits because the injury prevented him from doing work for his own motorbike repair businesses, he told the court.

Judge Nicolas Cartwright said he would not activate the suspended sentence as it was a different kind of offence. He said a pre-sentence report had recommended unpaid work but it had been written before the defendant had been injured.

Carver was fined £85 and ordered to pay £415 towards court costs.
