A CRASH which left a 12-year-old boy in a critical condition after he was knocked off his bike has led to an urgent appeal for traffic calming measurers.

The young boy was left unconscious with serious head injuries after he was knocked off his bike on Ormond Road, Rubery, at about 12.45pm on Sunday, August 6.

He remains in a critical but stable condition.

Hundreds of residents have now thrown their weight behind a petition calling for traffic calming measurers in light of the incident – and others along the road in recent years.

The petition will be presented to Birmingham City Council in September to demand action.

Longbridge ward councillor Andy Cartwright, who collected signatures for the petition on Saturday, August 12, and will present the petition, said: “No family should have to go through what the boy’s family are experiencing.

“Longbridge ward is made of all different age groups that use the roads as drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

“We all have responsibilities as drivers to ensure we drive at the correct speed.

“I am calling for traffic calming measures and a change of law because we shouldn't need another person to die on our roads to make changes.”

The petition can be signed at the Nisa store on Ormond Road or Amy’s Floral Design at Father's Barn market in Rubery.

It has attracted 180 signatures so far, with 170 online via community website B31 Voices.

A 28-year-old man who handed himself in to police following the incident has been released under investigation.

A West Midlands Police spokesman added: “The victim is still critical but stable and the investigation is on-going.”
