THE largest affordable housing provider in Bromsgrove is launching a new tenancy accommodation, specifically designed for single residents under the age of 35.

Bromsgrove District Housing Trust (BDHT) came up with the scheme, alongside Bromsgrove District Council, to help those affected by the recent Local Housing Allowance (LHA) benefit cutbacks.

Head of housing solutions John Whitman said: "The LHA ruling limited options for single, young people in need of accommodation and so we are delighted to announce our latest initiative dedicated to serving our local community and helping those affected.”

Any under-35s on housing benefit who started their tenancy after April 2016 are only entitled to a shared-room rate - significantly lower than the previous one-bedroom accommodation option - meaning many will face a shortfall to meet their rent in 2019.

In response, BDHT is currently working to convert properties across the district into accommodation that two people can share.

Tenants will be given their own shared accommodation agreement that includes rent and all bills, and will be required to work with BDHT's Driving Futures team, which was created to get local people into employment.

Once they have been permanently employed for six months, the tenant will then be entitled to move to one of BDHT's one-bedroom self-contained properties.

These homes come complete with carpets, flooring and blinds, as well as a set of communal furniture, including white goods.
