MP for Bromsgrove Sajid Javid has supported the Prime Ministers decision to take military action against Syria.

On Saturday (April 14), the United States, Britain and France conducted air strikes targeting alleged chemical weapons facilities in Syria, in retaliation to a suspected chemical weapons attack.

Theresa May has since defended her decision not to seek parliamentary approval for the intervention, following criticism from opposition parties.

MP Sajid Javid, who is also the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, said he was 'proud of our country' for the decision.

He said: "I spent last week in a state of abject horror as images and videos of children, convulsing and foaming at the mouth, emerged from Syria.

"Evidence soon emerged this was another chemical weapon attack by the Russian-backed Syrian regime on its own people. There is no other plausible explanation.

"I attended an emergency Cabinet meeting on Thursday to discuss Britain’s response. The choice before us was clear: let the use of chemical weapons go unchallenged, or send a clear signal that they must never be tolerated.

"In reality, that’s no choice at all.

"On Saturday, the PM rightly authorised British armed-forces to conduct a limited and targeted strike to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.

"Let me be clear. This was not about taking sides in a civil war. This was not about regime change. This is about our moral obligation to alleviate the further humanitarian suffering of the Syrian people.

"I have always firmly believed that military action should be our last resort - after exploring all other alternatives.

"Russia, however, has systematically vetoed any attempt at setting up an independent investigation or holding the perpetrators of this tragedy to account through the UN.

"I am in no doubt that many of you feel as strongly as I do about the use of chemical weapons and British military action in such a troubled region.

"But this action - alongside our allies the US and France - was necessary, just, legal and proportionate.

"I’m proud of our country for taking it."
