THE third Housman Society Schools' Reading Competition produced keen interest among the competitors.
Five local secondary schools took part in last Thursday's (Nov 5) event held at Artrix and it says much for the vibrant state of the arts at North Bromsgrove High School that their pupils should have won both senior and junior prizes.
Chairman of the judges for the juniors, Valerie Richardson, praised Dan Edwards for his poise and personality in his reading of Housman’s “R.L.S.” and John Cooper Clarke’s “Kung Fu International”.
In the seniors it was another North pupil, Elizabeth Harris, whose reading of Housman’s “True Lover” and Spike Milligan’s ABC that edged her into being the first prize winner in front of runner-up Hollie Brader’s vivacious reading of “The New Mistress”.
Of Elizabeth Harris, Andrew Maund, head of English at The King’s School, Worcester, said: “In a very strong field your style and the quality of your voice makes you a worthy winner”.
Chairman of the district council, councillor Chris Scurrell, handed out the prizes. He said: “This is one of the most enjoyable events I have attended in my year of office and I would like to congratulate not only all the pupils on the excellent standard achieved, but also the Housman Society on organising this competition and for continuing to make the name of Bromsgrove resonate throughout the world through our famous poeV
