New recycling scheme set to leave residents without a collection

A NEW recycling scheme which is promising to help Bromsgrove residents recycle more, is actually set to leave many without a recycling service all together.

The Advertiser/Messenger can reveal residents living in a number of roads in the town have received a letter informing them they will not receive their weekly recycling collections, when the council’s new system is introduced.

From April 6, Bromsgrove will fall into line with other Worcestershire councils by using a green bin for recycling, and a brown one for garden waste. The changes mean all items for recycling are placed loose in the green recycling bin, then sorted at a new facility in Norton.

The council say the new system is easy to use, and more items will be able to be recycled.

But the letter, addressed to the occupier, tells residents: “We do have plans to expand the kerbside recycling service to your area, however, due to operational access issues we are not able to implement our plans at this point in time.”

The letters, believed to have been sent to residents with narrow access to their properties, suggest taking recycling to the council’s bring bank facilities.

The roads understood to be affected include Carlyle Road, Charford Road, Central Road, All Saints Road, Bewell Head and Highfield Road.

Residents in these roads have had similar problems in the past. In 2008, householders were informed the garden waste collection service would no longer be provided to them.

Labour councillor for Charford, Sean Shannon, raised the issue at the last full council meeting.

Mr Shannon said: “Almost every week I am hearing about a new road that can’t receive the new collection.

“It is unfair when residents living in these roads are paying the same amount in council tax.”

He added that the worry was residents would choose to not recycle.

A spokesman for Bromsgrove District Council said the head of environmental services is meeting with Mr Shannon to find the best solution for residents.

The spokesman said: “We are working hard to try and find a resolution to this problem in the hope we can continue to provide a recycling service to the residents of those roads affected by our new collection service.”

3 cheap looking plastic bins in every garden. How pleasant the towns streets and lanes will look.

I wish I was one of the lucky 'few' who suffer 'restricted access'
