Residents chance to learn more on Bromsgrove's history

BROMSGROVE residents are being given the chance to learn more about the history of the town, during a High Street event on September 10.

A National Heritage Open Day event is being held between 10am-1pm, where visitors will be able to hunt for buried treasure in an archaeology sandpit, and ask local heritage questions to an archaeologist and Bromsgrove District Council’s conservation officer.

The event has been joint organised by the district council and Worcestershire County Council as part of this year’s English Heritage, open days scheme.

The open days run in September and help celebrate England’s architecture and culture, by offering free access to historical properties usually closed to the public, or which normally charge for admission.

Bromsgrove District Council’s portfolio holder for planning and regeneration, Councillor Jill Dyer said: “We’re pleased to be promoting local history.

“It should be a bit of fun to dig around looking for buried bones, and residents and visitors to the town will have the opportunity to find out more about the heritage of the area.”

Emma Hancox, the county council's historic environment record manager, said: "I encourage anyone to come on down to the High Street on the day and find out something new about the local area."

Details of Bromsgrove’s event and others across the West Midlands, can be viewed at www.heritageopendays.org.uk.
