Restoration work on famous Bromsgrove gravestones underway

MAJOR restoration work on two famous gravestones which have stood in a Bromsgrove churchyard since the 1840s is set to begin.

The gravestones of railwaymen Thomas Scaife and Joseph Rutherford were erected in the churchyard next to St John’s Church, in Kidderminster Road, following their tragic deaths at Bromsgrove Railway Station in 1840.

A restoration group, sitting under St John’s Church’s fabric committee, was set up, which raised the funds needed for the work to begin.

Yesterday, (June 26), the painstaking process of removing the stones from the graveyard took place, with the stones being moved to a specialist workshop ahead of their restoration.
