Chance to have your say on a new Bromsgrove Library

TOWNSFOLK are being encouraged to have their say on plans to close Bromsgrove Library, relocating it in the former Parkside school building at a one-stop shop of council services.

A public consultation is launching on Monday on the proposals that would see the library moved to the site, in Stourbridge Road, as part of a new multi-purpose community facility including a customer service centre, registry office, a community hall and offices for staff.

As well as the convenience of providing all these services in the same area, re-locating the library could also improve services for library users with increased opening hours, more space for adult and children's learning, extra meeting space, increased wifi and internet access, and a cafe.

As well as improving services the proposal, if implemented, would also contribute to the Libraries and Learning team's drive to save £1.8m, or 28 per cent, of its budget over the next few years as part of Worcestershire County Council's Better Outcomes, Lean Delivery savings programme.

The council say the existing Bromsgrove Library in Stratford Road is in need of costly repairs, has no flexible spaces for learning, and no potential for sharing spaces with other services - which is the key way the Libraries and Learning team is seeking to achieve its savings.

The consultation will run for 12 weeks until October 12, and a public meeting is also planned for September.

Councillor Anthony Blagg, county councillor for Bromsgrove Central, said: "The Hive in Worcester has been a tremendous success and I would want any new library in Bromsgrove to again become a place where local people feel proud and inspired.

“I would urge everyone to make their views known."

Don't follow Anthony Blagg's logic. Can't people feel inspired by books in the PURPOSE-BUILT library they already have?

Why do we want smalller libraries like the TINY Halesowen "library" shared with other council services?

Why do Bromsgrove citizens let themselves let themselves be hectored by the likes of Anthony Blagg and Sheila Blagg ( both county councillors) who TOGETHER rake in thousands of pounds in expenses if you consult the relevant section of the Worcestershire County Council web-site.

One money-saving solution might be not to vote for this VERY EXPENSIVE couple come the next election.

Think of all the library repairs we could pay for if we were to lose just these two councillors!

The new "facility" still has to be built and will presumably cost a few millions. Just how much precisely? Mr Blagg has not told you this>

The new "facility" has not yet been described to the public and it would seem likely that with the money to be "saved", space for the library service will be reduced leading to actulally fewer " flexible spaces for learning" ( whatever that means).

Will the book budget for this new Tiny Library be reduced for the new "library" as well? You bet it probably will!!

What will happen to the present library building? Sold for house building?

There are lots of questions to be asked!

Sack the Blaggs and the other councillor library vandals!!

Well, Councillor Blagg, with the money spent on the super library in Worcester, no wonder you want to cut branch libraries such as Catshill and Bromsgrove!

I have just checked the Worcestershire County Council website on councillor allowances;in 2010/11 Cllr A.Blagg was paid £25,519.56 and his wife Cllr S.Blagg was paid £9,019.80. Sheila Blagg is also chair of the ineffective police authority who fail to hold West Mercia Police to account on behalf of the public, which is their remit. She is paid over £25,000 for that position,so between them the Blaggs receive at least £60,000 per year for being councillors and/or on public authorities.

Lets be honest about this, the whole area that the library sits on is being developed at some point in the future, so the quicker they relocate to Parkside School premises, the quicker the council will make a quick buck. Just like the market and the old Pearl building area thats earmarked for some wonderful retail development. Nothing changes!!!
