Care home residents get in Olympic spirit
2:00pm Tuesday 31st July 2012 in Local
Claire Cardus, Hilda Poole and Dot Leeson enjoy an Olympic games event at Regents Court Care Home.
RESIDENTS at a Bromsgrove care home have been in training for their own Olympic Games – with the promise of gold, silver and bronze chocolate medals for the winners.
Staff and residents at Regents Court Care Home, Stourbridge Road, got the ball rolling with their own Olympic torch relay through the two-storey building.
Then the events started in earnest, with a giant inflatable egg and spoon race forming part of the fun on Friday, July 27 – the same day the real Olympic Games began in London.
“Most of our residents are old enough to remember the last London Olympics in 1948, so our own event sparked lots of memories for them,” said activities coordinator Heather Penny.
“For instance, whenever 96-year-old Lucy Rennie sees swimming on the television she talks about how she used to be a good diver.
“We are encouraging as many of our residents as possible to carry our inflatable Olympic torch through the building, even if they can manage only a few steps.”
