ONE of the worst cases of its kind ever to come before Bromsgrove magistrates was heard on Tuesday. Alfred and Mary Wood from Hill Top were charged with neglect by the NSPCC for allowing their children to become emaciated, undernourished, deformed, verminous, coved in bites and sores and for allowing them to sleep in a filthy bed.
The bench heard the father was bone idle and rather than work for a daily wage of 2/- on a nearby farm preferred to stay abed.
He was given two months’ jail at Worcester while his wife and children were advised to seek refuge in the Workhouse.
THE wet, miserable weather was said to be responsible for more muted activities surrounding Bromsgrove's ancient Midsummer Fair Day on Thursday.
However sales of horses, concentrated mainly in Church Street were up on last year. As usual the day attracted a fair number of tricksters, card sharpers and others eager to relieve the gullible of their cash.
