SCHOLARS at Catshill schools enjoyed an unprecedented experience on Saturday when they went on a railway trip to Bournemouth. Almost without exception it was the first time the youngsters had seen the sea. The party of 64 children and staff caught the 1am train from Bromsgrove and were seen off by a large number of parents. They arrived at their destination at 7am and enjoyed a full day on the beach. The party arrived back in Bromsgrove at 2am tired, but happy. Such was the success of the trip that it was hoped it would become an annual event.

RECENT heavy rain had played havoc with the early strawberry crop in and around Bromsgrove. It was a crop on which so many growers relied for their livelihoods. However, as this area was generally a week behind most others, there was hope that the recent warm weather may yet help in the salvaging of the bulk of the fruit. The meagre hay harvest too had been affected by the weather and was at least ten days behind being safely gathered and stored for winter feed.

FRANCIS Phillips, of no fixed abode, appeared before Bromsgrove magistrates charged with stealing two knives and a fork from the town’s Cottage Hospital. Magistrates heard he had consumed the best part of 1/- worth of beer and that he had not been in a bed for four months, factors he claimed had clouded his judgement. He had stolen the items while visiting the hospital and purporting to want to speak to the matron. The bench heard that this was his 42nd appearance in court, a fact which helped them decide to hand him a stiff three-month jail sentence at Worcester with hard labour.
