BROMSGROVE Rovers’ finances were in a perilous position despite the hefty £1,000 transfer fee the club had received from the sale of Brian Punter. Overall the Greens made a loss of £2,484/14/3 on the season, but had been rescued yet again by the supporters’ club. It was the club’s biggest failure to make ends meet. One of the main reasons for the club’s plight was a 50 per cent fall off in gate receipts, mainly due to their early exit from the FA Cup last season.

THE second edition of The Messenger’s emergency strike single sheet paper carried news of the death of Horace Millingham, aged 57. He was licensee of the New Inn, Hanbury, and previously, for ten years, of the Dog and Pheasant in Bromsgrove. A native of Aston Fields, he had been a bugler in the scouts and a drummer in the town band. He had also founded his own jazz band. A keen supporter of Bromsgrove carnival, his wife at one time had made 48 costumes.

THE prospects appeared bright for employees of Garringtons, the Bromsgrove castings company, despite fluctuations in the auto components markets. But this was compensated for by steady orders from the rail and agricultural industries. Sales to the aircraft industry, however, had been badly affected.
