MENTION steam powered vehicles and traction engines, once commonly seen on farms or repairing roads, or trains spring to mind.
But this week’s Memory Lane photo features a different type of steam powered vehicle – a Sentinel lorry. The photo was taken more than 50 years ago and shows the owner, the late Les Lambe, at the wheel at his home – Moat Mill at Charford, from where his family ran a haulage and agricultural contactor’s business.
The firebox was at the front of the lorry and the smoke escaped via the chimney on the top right of the cab.
Don Burden, from Bromsgrove who kindly lent us the photo, said the lorry was sold to an enthusiast in Canada in 1958, but has since been returned to the UK to a member of the original owner’s family.
